Which country or city has a 6-month night and a 6-month day?

Only areas that fall on the North and South Poles or are in very close proximity to either, experience a 6-month-long night and day.  It`s a common misconception that all the places in the extreme north experience this phenomenon of a 6-month-long day and an equally long night. Although there are parts in the north of Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Russia, Canada, Alaska (US) and Finland that experience such long days and nights but it`s just that in the summers, days get very long and in winters they get very short. It`s not like there is an extremely long period of only daylight and then a long period of darkness.  A pole, the end of a planetary axis, is either tilted toward the sun, and stays in the Sun as the Earth spins, or tilted away from the Sun, and cannot move into daylight. Therefore it`s only the POLES (North and South), that experience 6-months of daylight and then 6 months of darkness.  Only areas within the Arctic Circle or Antarctic Circle (a latitude ...

Latitude/Longitude Activity

Youngsters work in groups to solve clues involving latitude and longitude coordinates in order to decipher mystery animals in this fun learning experience!

A World of Information

Students analyze data and statistics about countries around the world. They read graphs and charts, color a world map to illustrate the top ten statistics about the world, and write a paragraph to summarize their information.

A Watery World

With about 70% of the earth's surface covered in oceans, it's fair to say that we live in a very wet world. Young scientists gain a better appreciation of this fact as they use maps to identify the world's ocean basins in the first lesson of this three-part earth science series.

Tropical Belt

Where in the world is the equator? Explore a world map with your class, coloring in oceans, continents, and rainforests while locating the three major lines of latitude: the equator, Tropic of Cancer, and Tropic of Capricorn. Discuss how the tropical belt is where the sun's energy is focused, allowing for the growth of rainforests. Most appropriate for third and fourth graders, use this as a great introduction to a unit on climates and biomes.

Change of policy? PM Modi will visit Israel, but skip Palestine

NEW DELHI: PM  Narendra Modi 's upcoming visit to Israel in July, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, will not see him travelling to  Palestine , a decision that underscores the "de-hyphenation" of India's relations with the two West Asian states. Modi's visit, billed as historic, is a significant step in openly embracing a relationship that his predecessors fostered while avoiding public displays. Contrary to expectations that Modi would include Palestine in his itinerary too, like many ministers did in the past, he will be travelling only to Israel. In a balancing act though, India is likely to host  Palestinian President  Mahmoud Abbas before Modi sets off for Israel. "Mr Modi is not visiting Palestine on this occasion. Inshallah, our President will be here this year," Palestinian ambassador to India Adnan Abu Alhaija confirmed to TOI. The delicate reworking of ties between the two states has seen India set up a joint commission co-chaired by mini...
